Notes and Reflections on Books and Media

Did you Pay Attention in School?

Lies My Teacher Told Me, 2nd Edition

James Loewen

When people debate something like Columbus Day, most are debating the figures of their High School textbooks -- or the mood and points remembered. It makes little sense that minorities should want to eclipse the courage, vision, and leadership of transatlantic journey and the American discovery, for example. Of course, textbooks don't tell the whole story and most people aren't running off to do independent research. Probably people shouldn't have to do their own research after receiving state instruction -- if someone says something contradictory in their day-to-day, people would consider it due to not having paid attention in school, anyway.
