Malthus posited a carrying capacity of a human environment; exceed some population and suffering and decline is imminent. I don't have access to this paper, but the study looks at the world population growth graphed relative to population, and at least I think you can say no clear world carrying capacity for humans is shown. This is an awfully political topic, though, that's interesting because it doesn't separate right/left like others.
