The Reluctant Mr. Darwin: An Intimate Portrait of Charles Darwin and the Making of His Theory of Evolution
"God, it is intolerable to think of spending ones whole life, like a neuter bee, working, working, & nothing after all.— No, no won’t do.— ...Only picture to yourself a nice soft wife on a sofa with good fire, & books & music perhaps" - Darwin - David Quammen, The Reluctant Mr. Darwin: An Intimate Portrait of Charles Darwin and the Making of His Theory of Evolution (2007)
Any biography of Darwin can be expected to comment on his notes about marriage. Marriage means probable poverty, isolation from metropolitan scientific community, no money for books, and time lost to domestic duties, but in the end -- Marry—Mary—Marry Q.E.D. -- Darwin can't talk himself out of it.
