The Jungle Grows Back: America and Our Imperiled World
"This story of human progress is a myth, however. If the last century has taught us anything, it is that scientific and technological progress and the expansion of knowledge, while capable of improving our lives materially, have brought no lasting improvement in human behavior." - Robert Kagan, The Jungle Grows Back: America and Our Imperiled World (2018)
The physicist Michio Kaku sees humanity through levels of energy usage and cooperation. Type 0 society: dead plants and tribes. Type 1: global solar capture and world cooperation. And so on.
A big, and I think largely open, question is whether the progressive or circular view of human society is more accurate. Whether an inflection is occurring which separates the past and future.
