- William L. Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany (1960)
Background to Nazi Takeover (1920-1933):
A new republican state formed by conservatives to keep communists from gaining power. Conservatives don't care for the republic and would rather return to monarchy, but the Emperor is in exile.
Unemployment, soldiers having difficulty finding civilian work.
Disgrace following the loss of WWI, reparations to pay, boughts of extreme inflation (although a brief period of economic growth when Americans were investing in Germany, cut short when America entered their depression).
A history of the German people submitting to autocrats -- people accustomed to regiment.
