- Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens A Brief History of Humankind (2015)

Hunter-gatherer communities in fertile areas don't exist any longer for comparison, but the author claims the transition to agriculture reduced the quality of the human diet, made the failure of a single crop worse, extended the work-day, and concentrated humans so outbreak of disease was more likely. At a macro level, it was an important transition to prepared for political structure, writing, and trade but it didn't necessary improve the life of the average peasant farmer. However, like today, when population grows under a new system or technology, you can't go back short of catastrophe or multi-generation population control.
