Notes and Reflections on Books and Media

by Hannah Leitheiser

Nineteen Eighty-Four

George Orwell

"The first thing you must realize is that power is collective. The individual only has power in so far as he ceases to be an individual. You know the Party slogan: "Freedom is Slavery". Has it ever occurred to you that it is reversible? Slavery is freedom. Alone--free--the human being is always defeated." - 1984

There's a truth to that. For example, if I create my own university that appeals to my individualism, although not a slave of some professor or administrative system, I become a slave to the lack of opportunity of a non-human-esteemed education. Of course, whether individual or collective, nothing lasts forever.
