Notes and Reflections on Books and Media

The Mason-Bees

J. Henri Fabre

'Finished another book by the French entomologist Fabre -- this time we move from spiders to bees. Presumably you're all familiar with the hive bees -- honeycombs, teamwork, division of labor, and only one fertile queen. The mason bees, then, are the autists -- females build their own mud-encased cavity of honey for the grub that will hatch from her egg.
