Notes and Reflections on Books and Media

by Hannah Leitheiser

The Andes and the Amazon

James Horton

Listening to a book about the Andes and the Amazon from the 1800's. Mostly because I can get old books in audio format for free. But it's kinda nice to listen to travel literature from this period, because much of it is complaining -- mosquitoes, mud, nothing is clean, the food is inedible(, the people are lazy) -- and so, that I will probably never travel to South America makes me feel better than if I were hearing a more modern, gleaming account.

They're talking about the Milk Way in the sky, calling it the Zodiac Light, saying maybe it's asteroids or dust orbiting the Earth, nobody is sure.
