When Lewis of the American Lewis and Clarke expedition reached the Pacific Ocean, as one of the first white people to traverse the continent, Lewis logged no record. It would be a bit like Neil Armstrong coming back empty handed. "What was it like to land on the moon? I can't remember."

It wasn't the only time Lewis was silent about significant events in the expedition, and the cause is puzzling.
