Notes and Reflections on Books and Media

by Hannah Leitheiser

War of the Worlds

H. G. Wells

"'Well, the Martians will just be a godsend to these [weak people]. Nice roomy cages, fattening food, careful breeding, no worry. In a week or so chasing about the fields and lands on empty stomachs they'll come and be caught cheerful...Very likely these Martians will make pets of some of them, train them to do tricks...'" - H. G. Wells, War of the Worlds (1897)

Although I realize it would be honorable to be one of those with the spirit to resist the Martians, and live with freedom and dignity, I have the temperament of a rabbit, most of the time.
