One can identify squirrel activity by their leaving from various food sources.  Squirrels leave piles of shelled hard nuts, such as walnuts, below favorite feeding posts.  The squirrel strip the scales from pine cones, leaving piles of pieces, and discarded cores.  Pictured are the remains of a Scots pine (Pinus slyvestris) cone following dissection by a fox squirrel.
