One of the books I'm reading made the claim that the instinct of the possum to play dead can't very easily fool a mammalian predator, and may, therefore be a vestibular defense against hungry reptiles (dinosaurs?). I had not heard that before, and I'm not sure of its truth, but the possum in its marsupial nature is one of the ancient types of mammals, so maybe.
