A Treatise on Staff Making and Pivoting
|Eugene Edward HALL||1910|
Read a small book on how to make what's called a balance staff. This is part of a watch or clock around which the spiral torsion spring is wrapped and flywheel is mounted. In the picture, it's on a lathe, but the two ends will come to points, to be mounted so it can turn. Not that I ever intend to build a (mechanical) clock by hand, but you can appreciate all the little details involved in our technologies, up to the way to shape the ends so that capillary actions draws the oil into the interstice.
